Traveling by Road in Colombia

Travel through Colombia

Colombia is one of the most megadiverse countries in the world, to get closer to this diversity you just need to travel through its different regions by road.

When we think about traveling, we are used to looking at flight search pages, however, we overlook one of the best alternatives to explore our beautiful country, traveling by land.

It is safe to travel by road, Colombia has made great progress in infrastructure and safety, which is why today it is possible to explore the territory and enjoy unique and unexplored corners of our country safely. When traveling by road, we traverse and observe the landscape at our own pace, we can stop along the way to see crafts, try different types of fruits, and enjoy the delicious regional cuisine, also, we will have the opportunity to take detours on alternative routes to visit small towns and rural areas.

Plan your itinerary

Traveling by road makes it necessary to plan our trip, get a general idea about the destination or a place you would like to visit and the things you would like to do. When researching destinations, learn about the different routes and travel paths, the peak traffic hours, the distance to cover, try to get an idea of how long the trip will be and what types of places you want to visit. Some planning is necessary to ensure you return home on time. Additionally, if there are specific places to visit, find out in advance the opening and closing hours, special dates, and accommodation. Make sure to know this beforehand to be prepared.

What to bring on your road trip

We must not forget that in Colombia the climate can change in just a few hours of travel, so it is important to be prepared for weather changes with lightweight clothing and sunglasses for hot weather, and a jacket, a blanket, or a scarf for colder weather. It is also important to carry some cash because it is most likely that on the road they do not accept cards and you will not want to miss out on crafts, fruits, food, drinks, and typical sweets, if you crave them. Also remember to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated along the way.

Now that you have everything ready and have finished planning, it’s time to leave and enjoy the trip. The trip will be as fun and exciting as you decide to make it, so don’t worry with preconceived ideas or high expectations. Keep an open mind to discover new things along the way, trust your instincts and discover something completely new. Take scenic routes whenever you can, be spontaneous and visit shops that catch your attention but that you wouldn’t normally visit, don’t stick too much to the itinerary, and wherever you go, make sure to walk around the city, meet local people, and eat at local restaurants, which are much better and tastier.

One of the most enriching and fun aspects of traveling is making new friends. Local people who will probably break your stereotypes but will undoubtedly allow you to discover deep and meaningful things. Take the time to converse and exchange perceptions and points of view; this is definitely part of the journey, relating and learning more about each other.

Don’t forget to document your trip

Finally, keep the memories of your trip alive, take photographs whether with your digital camera or your cell phone, make sure to have the batteries well charged and enough storage capacity. Don’t be stingy with photos, take many, so you will at least have one perfect shot. Photograph the architecture of the villages, the doors and windows. Aim to take photos of the people you meet on the trip, even if it seems cheesy or in bad taste, this will guarantee a good laugh and a good memory.
