Hike to Iguaque Lagoon + Cucunuba + Villa de Leyva

Day 1

We will leave Bogotá to enjoy two days of adventure, breathtaking landscapes, and magic. Along the way, we will enjoy a traditional breakfast. We will make a stop in Cucunuba, to explore its beautiful cobblestone streets. Then, we will arrive at Villa de Leyva to have lunch and settle into our accommodation. We will leave our luggage and take a guided tour of this enchanting colonial town. We will return for dinner, rest, and prepare for our big hike the next day.

Day 2

After breakfast and getting everything ready to go, we will head to the Iguaque Flora and Fauna Sanctuary, a place surrounded by one of the most important ecosystems for the world's water supply, the páramo. At the Iguaque Flora and Fauna Sanctuary, we will visit the sacred lagoon of Iguaque, which, according to Muísca mythology, is the cradle of humanity. From there, Bachué, the mother of the Muísca people, emerged, and for this reason, it is believed that pilgrimages to this sacred lagoon cleanse the soul and purify the spirit.

The altitude ranges between 2,400 and 3,800 meters above sea level, and the territory and its surrounding area in the northernmost part are among the regions with the highest presence of oak in the country. We will enjoy a delicious packed lunch at the sanctuary, and upon descending again, we will prepare to return to Bogotá.

Villa de Leyva

The stone streets and white facades welcome travelers arriving in Villa de Leyva, a municipality in Boyacá that is part of the Network of Heritage Towns of Colombia and can be reached from Bogotá in about three hours by land heading northeast of the city. Founded on June 12, 1572, and renowned for its colonial architecture, Villa de Leyva experiences the 21st century with intensity but shares its history with those who visit it.

Cucunuba

One of the most charming municipalities in the Ubaté province, located just 90 km north of Bogotá (a 2-hour drive). This destination is known for its rural landscapes, temperate climate, and rich cultural and artisanal heritage. With roots dating back to the Muiscas and its founding in 1778, Cucunubá preserves its traditions alive, such as the festivals of Saint Michael the Archangel, as well as its local music, dances, and crafts. Among its main attractions are the Main Square surrounded by colonial architecture, the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel from the 18th century, and the cobblestone streets that reflect the historical essence of the municipality. This town is an ideal destination for rural and cultural tourism, where every corner inspires history and tradition.

Hagia Sophia

Located 12 km from Villa de Leyva and 77 km from Tunja, Santa Sofía, Boyacá is an ideal destination for adventure and nature lovers. It offers unique experiences such as the Stairway to Heaven, the longest in the country with 254 meters suspended and over 600 steps, and the Hidden Waterfall of Hayal, a 150-meter cave with perfect waterfalls for spelunking. Additionally, the municipality preserves traditions with fairs, religious festivals, and cultural events like the Reign of the Curuba, an ancestral fruit of the region. Santa Sofía combines adventure, culture, and history, making it an unmissable plan in Boyacá.

Iguaque Flora and Fauna Sanctuary

In the Fauna and Flora Sanctuary of Iguaque, visitors will find the sacred lagoon of Iguaque, which, according to Muisca mythology, is the cradle of humanity. From there emerged Bachué, the mother of the Muisca people, and for this reason, it is believed that pilgrimages to this sacred lagoon cleanse the soul and purify the spirit. There are a total of 7 glacial-origin lagoons within the Sanctuary. With altitudes between 2,400 and 3,800 meters above sea level, the territory and its area of influence in the northernmost part constitute one of the regions with the highest presence of oak in the country. The Sanctuary is of vital importance as a provider of ecosystem services, such as water supply for consumption by the populations of the municipalities of Villa de Leyva, Arcabuco, and Chíquiza.

💧 It is important to carry a water bottle and stay consistently hydrated.

🧢 Bring a hat or cap to protect yourself from the sun. Using sunscreen is essential; remember to apply a mineral sunscreen on your face. 

👕 Pack enough clothing for two days. Comfortable, waterproof, and breathable clothes. The weather is mild but quite variable, so bring some warm layers. Don't forget your change of clothes in case you get wet or muddy.

🥾 Wear comfortable shoes, preferably hiking boots; avoid sneakers or canvas shoes. It's important to have a change of shoes in case your footwear gets wet during the hike. 

💊 Bring your medications and personal documents (health insurance card and ID).

🎒 Do not use a rolling suitcase. Carry a hands-free backpack to store your belongings. Bring an additional small backpack so you can carry your personal items during the hikes. 

🔦 We suggest bringing a blanket for the cold and a flashlight. 

🍎 Bring some snacks such as granola bars, sandwiches, fruits, and nuts.

• Linear trail with a length of 4.7 km. • Starts at an altitude of 2,840 meters above sea level and ends at 3,650 meters above sea level
• Passes through representative ecosystems and páramo of the sanctuary (Andean forest, high Andean)
• Time: 4 to 6 hours (round trip) ascending depending on the physical condition of the traveler. 
• Keep in mind that you are responsible for your belongings. Protect your electronic devices and personal documents from rain and humidity.
• Keep your cell phone charged; this will allow you to take photos and use it in case of emergency.
• Your safety is very important, please be cautious, always keep the group in sight, and follow the guide's instructions.
• Do not participate in a hike if you are sleep-deprived, intoxicated, pregnant, or have medical disabilities.
• Strictly follow your doctor's instructions regarding injuries and, if necessary, bring your personal medications.
